Cubby House Therapy is a Paediatric Occupational Therapy and Child Play Therapy service located in Yarraville, in the Western suburbs of Melbourne. We are family centred, strengths based and neurodivergent affirming in our approach to intervention.

At Cubby House Therapy, we are strong advocates for letting our 'kids be kids'. We work with children and their families in a fun and innovative way, helping children achieve their goals and live happy and healthy lives.

We work with children aged 0-12 years with an array of diagnoses and difficulties including:

  • Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

  • Developmental Delay

  • Sensory Processing Difficulties

  • Difficulties with Attention and Concentration

  • Learning Difficulties

  • Behaviour and Emotional Regulation Challenges

  • Fine and Gross Motor goals

  • School Readiness Skills

  • Self-care Skills

At Cubby House Therapy, we believe in a systemic approach to intervention. We work collaboratively with each child's parents and caregivers, education staff and other health professionals, ensuring we are viewing each child holistically and working together to help children achieve their goals and reach their potential.

At Cubby House Therapy, we have a strong focus on evidence-based practice, with an emphasis on play and mindfulness. We believe that these approaches help to improve a child's overall health and wellbeing and help to foster their therapeutic journey.

We provide services to families who have NDIS funding (self and plan managed), Medicare (Enhanced Primary Care Plan) and those who are funding services privately.

Why Play?

Play is the primary role of a child. It is through play that children learn about the world around them, develop confidence, self-esteem and an overall sense of identity.

Nothing 'lights up a child's brain like play'. Research shows that child-directed play helps to improve:

  • Receptive and expressive language skills

  • Narrative language

  • Abstract thinking and problem-solving skills

  • Social competence

  • Social and emotional wellbeing

  • Self-regulation

  • Creativity

Additionally, Non-Directive Play Therapy has many therapeutic benefits and allows children to make sense of their feelings and experiences.

To find out more information about the available evidence and benefits associated with Play Therapy, please refer to the Evidence Based Child Therapy website developed by the Association for Play Therapy (United States).

Why Mindfulness?

The practice of Mindfulness has been used for centuries. Traditionally used in Buddhist cultures, mindfulness involves bringing attention and awareness to the present moment, by engaging the senses to become more in-tune with our internal and external worlds.

Regular mindfulness practice can help to:

  • Decrease stress and anxiety

  • Assist with our ability to regulate our emotions

  • Build emotional resilience

  • Enhance our connection with ourselves and others

  • Increase self-awareness

  • Improve attention, concentration and memory

  • Enhance creativity and positivity

  • Increase energy levels

  • Improve sleep

At  Cubby House Therapy we recognise that children are often referred to Occupational Therapy and Play Therapy services due to concerns around emotional regulation and attention and concentration. We therefore attempt to incorporate some form of mindfulness in all of our intervention sessions, as being in a calm and regulated state is fundamental to our ability to attend and learn new skills.

You can find out more information about Mindfulness and it's many benefits at the mindful.org website.
